Journal Entry #2
My experience all throughout school helped shape me to become a teacher by showing me that the teachers that were a light to me I could do for other students. Students of my own, I want to be able to encourage, love, care, teach, and support all of my students the way my teachers were to me. School was a safe spot for me, a chance to be with my friends, learn, and to feel seen by people who genuinely care. I was the child who got excited for summer to be over and sad for snow days. I loved going to school and seeing my friends and teachers it was a highlight for most of my elementary years. When I went to high school it was the same but more friends and more supportive teachers.
I have wanted nothing more than to teach and be a light for my students, however many people ask the same questions and say the same statements, "Are you sure you want to be a teacher?" "The burnout is real!" "You won't get paid anything" "You want to be a glorified babysitter?" "The pay isn't worth it!".
Many people probably don't realize how offensive these statements or questions can be. All of the work and seeing your students grow and smile will be the most rewarding part of it all. A lot of people look down on this career because of the pay, and because they think the drain on it will bring one down but once you do something you really love I don't think that it is possible for someone to hate getting to work with little angels all day long. To love is to care and to care is to love.
