Journal Entry 7
Educators play an important role in helping students navigate the vast amount of information available online. In today’s digital world, teachers are not only responsible for delivering content but also for guiding students on how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively. This includes teaching digital literacy skills such as identifying credible sources, identifying facts from opinions, and recognizing bias. As a future educator I will encourage critical thinking by teaching students to compare multiple sources, check evidence, and question who created information and for what purpose. Encouraging responsible digital responsibilities is also important, which includes respectful online behavior, protecting personal information, understanding digital footprints, and avoiding plagiarism through proper citation. These responsibilities matter now more than ever because the internet produces an overwhelming amount of information every day, making it difficult for students to determine what is accurate or trustworthy. I struggle with this today, trying to find credible resources and apply the best knowledge to my writing.
You highlight several important responsibilities teachers have, especially teaching students how to evaluate sources and think critically about the information they find online. I also appreciated your honesty about struggling yourself to find credible resources—that shows real reflection about the challenges students face today. As a future teacher, what are some ways you might help students practice identifying credible sources during a lesson?
